Cheap VPS Server – DRBD Replication

DRBD is a complex structure including various nodes. However, there are usually two nodes, active (primary) and inactive (secondary) which are commonly known as hot standby. Many people use the facility to enhance the configuration of a dedicated server. However, it is not limited to the same, a person is free to combine the same with a Cheap VPS Server hosting. one such hosting provider which provides the facility is Onlive Server.

In simple words, a person can explain DRBD to be made up of two segments that work together to ensure the proper and high-end functioning of the data storage. The two segments are quite normal and can be known by many. It is a kernel module and using administrative tools. Both are efficient at the work, they are supposed to do. The kernel module is out there to check up on the DRBD behavior while the user administrative tools are used to operate DRBD disks.

Speaking of the DRBD, the database mirroring and replication process is being enabled with the help of this architecture. DRBD is a virtual ad flexible block device that is made to run on three different replication protocols basically known as Protocol A, Protocol B, and Protocol C as the normal rules. However, one is free to name it whatever they want as per their choice. At the end of the day, what matters is the synchronous and asynchronous writing operations.

The best part of the story is that data replication is invisible to any of the other applications that are using the same protocols. This way, the whole data is secured and the secrecy is maintained at the same time.

  1. Protocol A – The protocol A is simple as it comprises the asynchronous replication which involves writing of the operations on the primary node whether it be active or passive server situation. The writing of the operation on the node is done only when the mirror data is available in the TCP transport framework (send buffer). This architecture is widely used in a wide area network where there is a need for replicating stacked resources.
  2. Protocol B – This process is done after the local disk writes up is completed. Usually, there is no loss in the failover when the Protocol B is in functioning. There are times when the data stored in the node is deleted completely or when both the nodes crashed badly. This is a time when the combination of both Protocol A and C is brought into function. With this, one can easily figure out how excellently the DRBD works and how versatile it is in replicating the data.
  3. Protocol C – As Protocol A covers the asynchronous replication, it is kind of obvious that Protocol C is required to cover the synchronous replication of the write operations needed locally. In the case of protocol C, the operation is considered to be complete only when replication confirmation is being received on both the local and remote disks. Usually, all the DRBD are focused on using Protocol C as their default protocol. However, one can always move to change the same by using the reconfiguration setup.
